The BBC Got It Wrong

European Hedgehog Posted by European Hedgehog at 12:49 PM on November 28, 2008 Comments comments (2)

I was informed by a member of my Hedgehog forum that recently, the BBC published a news article on the European Hedgehog which contained incorrect information.

Here is the article:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/7750560.stm

Upon watching the news article, I quickly reslised that they had made multiple mistakes to do with the Hedgehog.

The BBC wrongly put the message across that Hedgehogs that are 300g and over are ok to continue on in the wild at this time of year. This incorrect information had now been broadcast to many people.

Hedgehogs should be at least 500g to survive, although we prefer 600g.

Please help by informing the BBC that they are wrong. You can do so here:

European Hedgehog Posted by European Hedgehog at 04:54 AM on November 01, 2008 Comments comments (0)

Hello all,

Just a quick note- I have decided to construct a forum for us to talk about the Hedgehogs on. This should be ready in a Day or two, time wise. The new forum should be able to grow quickly thanks to the kind people who have added a link on their website to this one. Hopefuly all should go well.

I've already been Admin of 2 forums before, these have been passed on to others so I can really put my time towards this website... and forum- soon!

So watch this space!

Bethany.

Help Needed For Dying Hedgehogs

European Hedgehog Posted by European Hedgehog at 09:06 PM on October 08, 2008 Comments comments (1)

Help Needed For Dying Hedgehogs

''THOUSANDS of juvenile hedgehogs will die this autumn and winter without a helping hand from people, according to a national emergency appeal launched by the British Hedgehog Protection Society.

These are juvenile animals, born so late in the summer that they have not had time to build up a layer of fat which would allow them to survive the winter hibernation. They will die in their tens of thousands unless gardeners put out food to allow them to fatten up to face the coming hardship.

?They need to weigh at the very least 450gms (1lb), preferably 600gms (22oz), in order to have sufficient fat reserves to sleep through the winter,? says the society. ?? Putting out meat based dog or cat food can be a lifesaver. Water can also be provided but NOT milk as this can cause stomach upsets.

?Hedgehogs are not normally seen out in the day and if they are seen it could mean they are desperate for food or very poorly. If you see one out in the day foraging do put out a dish of food, however if it is walking as though it is drunk and wobbly or is ?sunbathing? the chances are it is hypothermic and needs help quickly.?

These sick animals should be brought indoors (use an old towel to pick it up) and place it in a high-sided cardboard box on a well-wrapped hot water bottle. Keep the towel over the hedgehog to keep the heat in. The hot water bottle needs to be kept warm as if allowed to go cold it will draw heat away from the hedgehog.''
