The BBC Got It Wrong

European Hedgehog Posted by European Hedgehog at 12:49 PM on November 28, 2008

I was informed by a member of my Hedgehog forum that recently, the BBC published a news article on the European Hedgehog which contained incorrect information.

Here is the article:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/7750560.stm

Upon watching the news article, I quickly reslised that they had made multiple mistakes to do with the Hedgehog.

The BBC wrongly put the message across that Hedgehogs that are 300g and over are ok to continue on in the wild at this time of year. This incorrect information had now been broadcast to many people.

Hedgehogs should be at least 500g to survive, although we prefer 600g.

Please help by informing the BBC that they are wrong. You can do so here:

Well, I had a reply from the BBC after several days, here it is:

Dear Miss Stewart

Thanks for your e-mail regarding the BBC News.

I understand you're unhappy as you believe we transmitted incorrect information regarding hedgehogs. I note that you point out that hedgehogs should actually be 600g in weight to stand the best possible chance of survival.

It should be pointed out that it was never our intention to broadcast any incorrect information, as we certainly wouldn't want to endanger any hedgehogs. We appreciate the work you do and we apologise for any offence caused as a result of the inaccurate remarks.

I'd like to take a moment to assure you that your comments have been registered on our audience log. This is a daily report of audience feedback that's circulated to many BBC staff, including members of the BBC Executive Board, channel controllers and other senior managers. It's also published on our intranet site, so it's available for all staff to view. In addition to this, we regularly compile tailored audience feedback reports for specific programmes so they can have an overview of all contacts received about their series. If a report's compiled relating to this issue, then your comments will also appear here.

Thanks for taking the time to contact us with your concerns.

Regards

Good to know! I've also heard on BBC radio, someone presenting as a "fact" that hedgehogs die if you remove their fleas, which is also nonsense.
